Finding Balance: Understanding the Difference Between Restriction and Sacrifice
My philosophy around weight loss, weight management, and behavior change is rooted in flexibility, not restriction. I believe removing unnecessary rules creates a healthier, more sustainable approach to reaching your goals. However, removing restriction is often misunderstood as meaning you shouldn't have to make sacrifices. The reality is that meaningful change always requires some level of sacrifice.
The key is understanding the difference.
A sacrifice is a conscious choice. It's deciding to give up something you value today in exchange for something you value even more tomorrow. A restriction, on the other hand, feels like an outside rule or limitation that is being imposed on you. Restriction often creates feelings of deprivation, while sacrifice is driven by purpose and personal choice.
Sometimes the difference comes down to mindset. If a sacrifice starts to feel like a restriction, it may be worth asking yourself how you're framing it. Are you choosing this because it aligns with your goals, or are you focusing only on what you're giving up?
The sacrifices required for change look different for everyone because our routines, habits, responsibilities, and goals are all unique. For one person, the biggest sacrifice may be turning off the TV earlier and getting to bed on time. For another, it may be passing on a nightly glass of wine or dessert. Someone else may choose to wake up 30 minutes earlier to fit in exercise. Every choice involves a trade-off, and finding a balance that works for your life is where long-term success happens.
One of the biggest mistakes people make is trying to change everything at once. Lasting habits are built gradually. Instead of overhauling your entire lifestyle, identify the one change that feels the most manageable and start there.
For example, if you're constantly exhausted in the morning, take a look at your evening routine. Are you staying up to watch "just one more episode" on Netflix? If so, that might be your starting point. Set a consistent bedtime, and when it's time, turn off the TV and head to bed. Try it for several nights and notice how you feel. If waking up feeling rested is truly important to you, ending your show a little earlier becomes a worthwhile sacrifice, not a punishment.
The goal is to identify what matters most to you and create a realistic plan to support it. Without a clear plan, it's easy to become frustrated, lose motivation, and feel like you're spinning your wheels.
The truth is that change requires giving something up. If it didn't, you would likely already have the habits, health, or body you're working toward. The good news is that sacrifices don't always feel like sacrifices forever. What requires effort on day one often becomes second nature with consistency. Eventually, the healthier choice becomes the easier choice.
As your coach, I don't make these decisions for you. The sacrifices have to be your own because your goals have to matter to you. My role isn't to tell you what to do. My role is to guide you, help you explore options, provide accountability, and work with you to create a plan that fits your life. Together, we'll build habits that are realistic, sustainable, and capable of helping you achieve your goals.
